🍂 Ten Things for the Changing Seasons

Becky Joan Spring painting- our current artistAs the clocks fall back on Sunday, November 2, we gain an hour — but let’s put it to good use.

Here in the Northwest, the shift from crisp fall days to steady winter rain is more than just a change in wardrobe — it’s a signal to get our homes ready. These ten simple tasks can help you stay comfortable, safe, and dry all season long.

The painting, is by Becky Joan Spinger, our current “artist in residence”. Come check out the 20+ pieces hanging in our Portland office.  It will be here through the end of the year.

1. Change those smoke detector batteries

They only seem to die at 3 a.m., right when you’re finally asleep. Swap them now and save yourself a sleepy broom-handle rescue mission. A quick check today means a quieter, safer winter.

2. Replace your furnace filter

A clean filter keeps your system running efficiently and your air fresher. Neglect it, and your furnace works harder — burning more energy and driving up your bill.

3. Clean your gutters

Clogged gutters can push water back under your roof shingles or send it cascading onto walkways. If heights aren’t your thing, hire someone before the rains truly settle in.

4. Be a good human — clear the street drains

When leaves pile up at the curb, stormwater has nowhere to go. A five-minute rake or broom session keeps puddles (and neighbors) happy.

5. Pay attention to downtown leaf-cleaning signs

City crews mean business — parked cars in posted leaf zones will be towed right on time. Move your car early and skip the ticket drama.  If you live in the downtown area or are visiting, you can check the schedule here.

6. Check window and door seals

A drafty window might not seem like much, but over a long Portland winter, it adds up. Fresh weatherstripping keeps the warmth in and the drizzle out.

7. Trim back branches

Winter wind plus soggy ground equals falling limbs. Take a walk around your yard now and trim anything that could threaten your roof, car, or power lines.

8. Test outdoor lighting

With the sun setting before dinner, good lighting is key for safety and comfort. Replace bulbs, clean fixtures, and make sure your timers are still accurate.

9. Swap porch plants for evergreens

Keep your home’s entry cheerful all season long. Hardy evergreens, hellebores, and ferns add life even on the grayest days.

10. Make it cozy

You’ve earned it. Light a candle, put on a pot of soup, and settle into the season that defines the Northwest — a little rain, a lot of warmth, and a home that’s ready for it.
