If you’re considering relocating to the Portland Metro, CONGRATULATIONS! This region is a great place to live, work, and play. Since several of our team members are transplants from other regions, we know how stressful relocating to a new area can be. So, we’re here to help ease your mind as much as possible with great information and even better service. Below you will find great area information, links to get you started on your own research, and a way to quickly receive our team’s relocation guide with even more information. As always, you can always contact us at 503-406-2532 if you need any assistance with the process!
Our beautiful city is the home to as many diverse neighborhoods as diverse groups of people who call our fine city “home.” Whether you’re looking for an urban loft experience in the heart of the city or a ranch style house in a suburban area, the Rose City offers something for everyone. As Realtors®, we know how important choosing the right neighborhood for your needs can be. To get started, take a look at the brief overviews of Portland neighborhoods and suburbs on our blog or request our Free Relocation Guide below. Both are excellent sources of information.
“Good schools” is often one of our client’s top criteria. The Portland metro is home to many public and private education options. When it comes to finding a school that fits the needs of your student(s), there are a number of resources to consider.
Sites like greatschools.org provide ratings that allow you to see what an institution has been rated according to their criteria as well as what community members have to say.
Portland Monthly (portlandmonthlymag.com) releases a list of top public and private schools each year since 2015. Check out the 2015 lists here.
For more great school resources, check out the links on our blog.
*** A note on school boundaries: they are subject to change. Portland underwent major boundary changes in 2016 and will need to displace students as major construction projects update schools. Voters passed bond measures in 2012 and 2017, funding major renovation projects.
Washington County has a Real Estate Transfer Tax. Multnomah and Clackamas Counties do not.
Anytime you move, it’s important to fill out a change of address form with the Postal Office. Click here to fill one out online – as a bonus, you’ll receive great coupons for services you might need!
You will also need to change your address and update your vehicle registration with the local DMV. Oregon law gives you 30 days to get an Oregon driver’s license and register your car at the DMV. In metro areas, your car must pass a Vehicle Inspection Program smog check at a DEQ facility before it can be registered.
Anytime you move to a new area, it’s good to know what laws are different.

As Realtors we are not attorneys, accountants, general contractors, government officials, elementary school teachers, home inspectors, title officers, mortgage brokers or property managers. We do know several of each profession, though. If you have specific items that are critical to your transaction and your situation, you should endeavor to get the answer directly from the source. Information degrades with each point of contact and interpretation and we want you to have the best information from the best sources. Please use us and our resources to help ensure that your real estate transaction is the best it can be. The Oregon Property Buyer Advisory, Oregon Property Seller Advisory and Agency Disclosure Pamphlet are all recommended reading.
